Nyerere national park is currently the largest national park in Tanzania and Africa as well covering an area of 30,000 square kilometers, the park could easily be described as the “Serengeti of Southern Tanzania” and together with Selous Game Reserve, they boast one of the world’s largest populations of elephants.

Nyerere National Park is situated approximately 219 kilometers from Dar es Salaam and it normally take about 4 hours’ drive.

The larger part of Nyerere national park experiences an arid climate, however other parts of the park consists of permanent water bodies with the Rufiji River with its tributaries being the main water source, other water bodies include Lake Siwandu, Lake Tagalala, Lake Mzizimia and Lake Manze.

The main type of fish caught in Nyerere national park on fishing safari is the cat fish, the tiger fish is other fish to expect. This fish is a little bit heard to catch but with patience and guidance from a tour guide, you will be able to catch the tiger fish which is the most sought after fish species. Expect to catch up to 15 kilograms of both the cat fish and the Tiger fish.

Note: Tiger fish is found and caught in the River Rufiji and the catch fish is caught and found in the lakes.

The best time to go for a safari in Nyerere national park for fishing experience is from June to around mid- October and from December to February.

 How to get to Nyerere national park

Nyerere national park can be reached using 3 modes of transport that is railway system, road transport and railway transport.

By railway – railway system is the cheapest mode of transport to get to Nyerere national park, the Tanzania Zambia Railway (TAZARA) is used to get to park and the ride takes about 4 to 5 hours from Dar es Salaam to Matabwe.

By road – both private and public means of transport can be used to get to Nyerere national park, from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere national park it is a drive of approximately 7 hours through Mloka and Kibiti t Mtemere gate.

By air – this is the easiest and most expensive way to get to Nyerere national park, flights are offered from Julius Nyerere International Airport to different airstrip in the park.

 Day 1: Pick from Dar-es-salaam and transfer to Nyerere National park (Selous game reserve).

Following your trip to Nyerere National park, you will be picked from your accommodation and later embark on   safaris to Nyerere national park, you will have a picnic lunch, later arrive at park check in at the lodge.  In the afternoon head to river Rufiji on a boat safari, with sightings of crocodiles, hippos and several animals and birds species on the shores.

Day 2:  Game drive in Nyerere national park.

Get up early in the morning, have breakfasts and head out for a game drive in the park searching for wildlife, the park is home to African elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wild dogs, kudus, elands, warthogs, lions, baboons’ bushbucks, baboons along with several bird’s species. Explore the wildlife potentials. later head back for dinner and overnight in the lodge.

Day 3: Walking Safari whole Day.

Wake to another day filled with wildlife experience, have breakfast and later head out for a walking safari with an armed ranger guide to mingle with nature on foot, discover plans and view wildlife   while on ground, later you will embark on a game drive in the park in search for wildlife with picnic lunch at any selected spot by the guide.  Later after the game drive, head back to the lodge.

Day 4:  Whole Day boat safari in Nyerere National park River Rufiji.

 Get up in the morning, have breakfast and later you will later head for your fishing safari experience on Rufiji river for the   entire day. You will have your picnic lunch at reserve.

Day 6: Transfer to Dar-es-salaam.
